H0 Scale History

The name H0 is derived from the fact that its 1:87 scale is approximately half that of 0 (zero) scale, hence H0. 0 scale in turn was named following the older and larger 1, 2, and 3 scales. The term H0 is pronounced ("aitch-oh" -- that is, the letters "h" and "o"), not "ho" nor "aitch-zero".



H0 scale trains first appeared in the United Kingdom in the 1930s, originally as an alternative to 00 gauge, but could not make commercial headway against the established 00 gauge. However, it became very popular in the United States, where it took off in the late 1950s after interest in model railroads as toys began to decline and more emphasis began to be placed on realism in response to hobbyist demand. While H0 scale is by nature more delicate than 0 scale, its smaller size allows modelers to fit more details and more scale miles into a comparable area.



In the 1960s, as H0 scale began to overtake 0 scale in popularity, even the stalwarts of other sizes, including Gilbert (makers of American Flyer) and Lionel Corporation began manufacturing H0 trains.



Currently, H0 is the most popular model railroad scale in both continental Europe and North America, whereas 00 gauge is still dominant in Britain.



There are some modelers in Great Britain who use H0 gauge. For them, the British 1:87 Scale Society was formed in 1994; it publishes a quarterly journal with news, views, and practical advice for modelers and collectors.



Today, H0 locomotives, rolling stock (cars or carriages), buildings, and scenery are available from a large number of manufacturers in a variety of price brackets.



Controls



Modern H0 trains run on two-rail track, which is powered by direct current (varying the voltage applied to the rails to change the speed, and polarity to change direction), or by Digital Command Control (sending digital commands to a decoder in each locomotive). Some trains, most notably by Mrklin of Germany, run on alternating current, supplied by a "third rail" consisting of small bumps on each tie down the center of the track.



On simple, usually temporary layouts, power is supplied by a power pack consisting of a transformer and rectifier, a rheostat or potentiometer for regulating voltage supplied to the track (and thus train speed), and a switch to control train direction double pole, double throw slide or toggle switch wired to reverse the polarity on the rails. On permanent layouts, multiple power supplies are traditionally used, with the trackage divided into electrically isolated sections called blocks; toggle or rotary switches (sometimes relays) are used to select which power supply controlled the train in a particular block. With the advent of digital command control, block divisions are largely eliminated, as the computerized controllers can control any train anywhere on the track at any time, with minor limitations.



Gauge



H0 scale has several gauges representing both standard and narrow gauges in roughly 1:87 scale. Standards are defined by the NMRA (in North America) and the NEM (in Continental Europe). While the standards are in practice interchangeable, they are not strictly identical.

Trackage



The earliest track available was "sectional track," available in a variety of standardized lengths, such as the ubiquitous 9" straight and curved tracks of 15", 18", and 22" radii. These are representative of curves as tight as 108feet (33m), which in the real world would only be found on some industrial spurs and light rail systems. With the introduction of "flex track," which can be bent to any desired shape (within reason), it became possible to create railroads with broader curves, and with them more accurate models. Today it is common to purchase six-axle diesels and full-length passenger cars which will not run properly on curves less than 24" in radius.



H0 scale track was originally manufactured with brass rail on plastic tie. Over time, track made of nickel-silver alloy became more common due to its superior resistance to corrosion. Today, almost all H0 scale track is of nickel silver, although Bachmann was up until quite recently manufacturing steel track.



In America, Atlas gained an early lead in track manufacturing, and their sectional, flex, and turnout track dominates the US market. In the UK, Peco's line of flex track and "Electrofrog" (powered frog) and "Insulfrog" (insulated frog) turnouts are more common. Both Atlas, Bachmann, and Life-Like all manufacture inexpensive, snap-together track with integral roadbed. Kato also manufactures a full line of "HO Unitrack," however it has not yet caught on as their N scale Unitrack has.



Rail height is measured in thousandths of an inch; "Code 83" track has a rail which is .083" high. As H0's commonly-available rail sizes, especially the popular "Code 100", are somewhat large (representative of extremely heavily-trafficked lines), many modelers opt for hand-laid finescale track with individually-laid wooden sleepers/crossties and rails secured by very small railroad spikes.



In Australia, many club-owned layouts employ Code 100 track so that club members can also run OO-scale models and older rolling stock with coarse (deep) wheel flanges



Availability



Because of the scale's popularity, a huge array of models, kits and supplies are manufactured. The annual H0 scale catalog by Wm. K. Walthers, North America's largest model railroad supplier, lists more than 1,000 pages of products in that scale alone. Models are generally available in three varieties:



Ready-to-Run models are fully ready for use right out of the box. Generally this means couplers, trucks, and other integral parts are installed at the factory, although some super detailing parts may still need to be attached.



Shake-the-Box kits are simple, easy-to-assemble kits; a freight car might include a one-piece body, a chassis, trucks, couplers, and a counterweight, while a structure kit might include walls, windows, doors, and glazing.



Craftsman Kits require a much higher level of skill to assemble and can include several hundreds of parts.



In addition to these kits, numerous manufacturers sell individual supplies for super detailing, scratch building, and kitbashing.



Quality varies extremely. Toylike, ready-to-run trains using plastic molds which are well over 50 years old are still sold; on the other side are highly-detailed limited-edition locomotive models made of brass by companies based in Japan and South Korea. A popular locomotive such as the F7/F9 may be available in thirty different versions with prices ranging from twenty to several thousand dollars or euros.



Advantages compared to other scales



H0 scale's popularity lies somewhat in its middle-of-the-road status. It is large enough to accommodate a great deal of detail in finer models, more so than the smaller N and Z scales, and can also be easily handled by children without as much fear of swallowing small parts. Models are usually less expensive than the smaller scales because of more exacting manufacturing process in N and Z, and also less expensive than S, 0 and G scales because of the smaller amount of material; the larger audience and the resultant economy of scale also drives H0 prices down. The size lends itself to elaborate track plans in a reasonable amount of room space, not as much as N but considerably more than S or 0. In short, H0 scale provides the balance between the detail of larger scales and the lower space requirements of smaller scales.



H0 in other hobbies and in marketing usage



In other hobbies, the term H0 is often used more loosely than in railroad modeling. In slot car racing, H0 does not denote a precise scale of car, but a general size of track on which the cars can range from 1:87 to approximately 1:64 scale. Small plastic model soldiers are often popularly referred to as H0 size if they are close to an inch in height, though the actual scale is usually 1:76 or 1:72.



Even in model railroading, the term HO can be stretched. Some British producers have marketed railway accessories such as detail items and figures, as "HO/OO" in an attempt to make them attractive to modelers in either scale. Sometimes the actual scale was 00, sometimes it split the difference (about 1:82). These items may be marketed as H0, especially in the US. In addition, some manufacturers or importers tend to label any small-scale model, regardless of exact scale, as H0 scale in order to increase sales to railroad modelers. The sizes of "H0" automobiles, for example, from different manufacturers, can vary surprisingly.

This type of agreement is also beneficial to builders who do not wish to sell to investors but are willing to consider a partnership with the occupant. Since the owner/occupant is technically part owner of the home or property, builders may be more willing to negotiate with them in a variety of scenarios.

From the buyer's perspective, the fact that he/she has probably initially made a commitment to live in the house offers a certain sense of stability. The potential buyer has probably grown accustomed to the house and has also established a level of comfort to the environment he/she has chosen to live in. As an occupant and future homeowner, it is very likely that he/she be more willing to agree to purchase the property for your original asking price without the inclusion of selling costs.

Among the before mentioned beneficial attributes of splitting the equity, for the seller, there is also the possibility of attaining a high return on the initial investment, if a seller decides to put up the down payment amount for the purchase of equity shares. As for the buyer, the overall cost of sale is often lower as there are typically no other extra fees involved.

Overall, sharing the equity of a real estate property has the potential to benefit both the buyer and the seller. Ultimately, the relationship established between the buyer and the seller will not only lead to a comfortable and smooth transition between owners, but also will build a foundation for numerous potential deals.

In the years after WWII, a remarkable shift occurred in American economic life. For the first time in history, we reached a stage of prosperous development in which we could produce far more goods and services than anyone needed. Various factors combined to create this new situation, including advanced industrial technology, wartime expansion of the economy, the destruction of Europe's industrial base while our own remained unscathed, and women added to the workforce.

To sustain all this growth, to continue paying wages and continue expanding profits, it was necessary to excessively stimulate our habits of consumption, to artificially increase the public's appetite for what was being produced. No longer were manufacturers content with simply determining what people wanted and needed. Thenceforward, to a degree never witnessed before, it became necessary to learn effective ways of persuading people that they wanted and needed all sorts of things that they had never wanted or needed before. As a result, the public was soon being bombarded with non-stop messages to fall into line and do what we were being told: the duty of Americans, it became clear, was to go shopping.

Just as advertisers were beginning to seek out scientific advice to help them develop more effective procedures for what was casually dubbed "engineering consent", television appeared on the scene. Soon the nation became practically catatonic. Consumers became targets rather than individuals, and the professional persuaders began using heavy artillery. Rather than explaining a product's quality or usefulness, they concentrated on ways to manipulate our suggestibility, our fears, our least becoming motivations. Using every technique they could garner from science, advertisers soon computerized vast amounts of information about our personal lives and buying habits as discerned from focus groups, psychological interviewing, brain-wave measurements, etc. But it continued to become increasingly difficult to reach people amidst of the exploding carnival of marketing and promotion, so as consumers became more jaded the marketers became more aggressive. To accommodate the ever-increasing number of things to be sold, advertisements had to become briefer and briefer. The effect of this was to shorten the public's already meager attention span: the image had to hit home deeply and instantly or it would never be noticed. It soon became apparent that this is best accomplished by evoking negative emotions such as anxiety, fear and envy - a far cry from simply distributing useful information about products, which required time and thoughtfulness. The goal was clear: consumers needed to think less and buy more.

With the general public virtually hypnotized into supporting these trends, more and more wealth was accumulating into fewer and fewer hands, giving big American business immense power to determine conditions here and abroad. This awesome financial power linked up with exuberant postwar feelings of patriotism and manifest destiny, and soon the American public was convinced that anything that interfered with the expansion of American corporate power was un-American, and thus began the incessant and peculiar identification of Capitalism with Freedom.

To maintain this fantastic public support for corporate America, public relations experts were brought in. The public needed to receive the appropriate messages, not just from advertising, but from the arts, entertainment, government, schools, museums, libraries - in short, from all avenues of modern culture. Now, in consequence, our lives are immersed in a steady stream of repetitive, continuous propaganda, perpetuating the various myths of economics, politics and science, and steadily eroding our individuality.

Propaganda is not concerned with what is best in men and women, it is not concerned with noble feelings or admirable goals. "Propaganda", writes Jacques Ellul, "does not aim to elevate man, but to make him serve."

"It must therefore utilize the most common feelings, the most widespread ideas, the crudest patterns, and in so doing place itself on a very low level with regard to what it wants men to do and to what end. Hate, hunger, and pride make better levers of propaganda than do love or impartiality."

For these and many other reasons, we now live in a culture in which style has achieved primacy over substance. Although the original conception of democracy meant that social equality was more important than a social elite, and therefore the symbols of an elite were rejected, we now take the contorted alternative view that the symbols and styles of elites should be mass produced and made available to everyone! Of course, mass production implies mass standardization, and thus any genuine uniqueness which was available when production meant handicraft has now been replaced by the 'sameness' of what is available to us all. In response to this, there are always some people whose need to be noticed causes them to present themselves in a manner so bizarre as to stand out in the crowd. This never lasts long, however, since whatever stands out in the crowd typically becomes the next trend, the next standardized fashion.

We see the powerful mesmerizing effects of advertising, public relations, and fashion, in the pursuit of the perfect car, the perfect body, the perfect house, the perfect mate. We see it in our participation in certain activities, and our passive adherence to certain beliefs, that make us acceptable to whatever crowd we wish to join. We continue to speak sentimentally of our great respect for 'rugged individualism', but large-scale contemporary production, trade, and consumption require centralized authority, massive planning, and a willingness of so-called individuals to become cogs in the economic machine. A community of genuine individuals, held together by love, is thus transformed into an efficient ant hill, held together by money and power.

The responsibility for all of this does not lie with Madison Avenue or the lords of corporate power. The responsibility lies with us, with our own 'suggestibility', the astonishing ease with which we abandon all efforts to think and reason for ourselves, and believe whatever we are told. This is all a consequence of an inverted soul: the demanding Body is in charge, making acquisitiveness the only goal of life; the Mind remains passive and aloof, benumbed by all the images and messages; and the Heart is shut down, the victim of pornography and brutality. As a result, the appetites have taken control of our souls rather than supporting our sousl, and Plato's 'Merchants' have likewise become the usurping rulers of our political and cultural life, while the 'Guardians' remain silent and asleep.

This is not how a soul is supposed to be governed, and it is not how an economy is supposed to be conducted.

As Jacob learned from Laban, and as Christ taught in his parables, it is good to increase material wealth and abundance (to be 'fruitful and multiply'), it is necessary and honorable to learn how to take care of ourselves, our families, our neighbors, our posterity. But the impulse to do this cannot come from what is lowest in ourselves, it cannot come from meaningless greed. The impulse has to come from 'Above', from the creative Mind, from the Spirit.

When massive corporations seek only to maintain their own power by artificially stimulating consumer demand and then stuffing the consumer's face with everything they now imagine they want (while nickle-and-diming them at every turn), our souls and our civilization continue to devolve and decay. But when entrepreneurs, through shrewdness and innovation, create wealth by benefiting others as well as themselves, this increased prosperity improves all of life and serves both human and divine purpose. This is why the Master in Christ's parable welcomed the slave who had turned five talents into ten back into His joy, but threw the slave who merely maintained the status quo back into the outer darkness.

Prosperity is the goal of economics. But for society as a whole, economic prosperity is a means to an end - and we have perverted this ideal by making the accumulation of wealth an end in itself, by making it the cold relentless motive for all the decisions we make as a nation and as individuals. The result of this is the emptiness and drudgery of the human ant hill, increased poverty and misery, and ever more violence in our cities and across the world, rather than the magnificent cultural flowering of Beauty, Wisdom, and Spirit, that was the dream of the American Founders.

Deep inner joy is an emotionally exciting feeling. If someone has never experienced it, then it is almost impossible to describe what it feels like. Sometimes it is hard to find words for some things. It seems maybe they are experienced preternaturally.

Creator is a wonderful, understanding Father. He understands joy, and that is probably why He allows us to earn it. It appears that is the only way for us to experience exuberant joy in our hearts.

Once, when Cherokee elder John Red Hat and I were driving east from Albuquerque on highway 40, I felt my joy was subdued or lacking. I felt sad, so I told my Father I really wanted my joy back. It was not long before we came to a rest area, and I quickly wheeled the truck into the exit. I pulled into one of the first parking spots and stopped. I got out of the truck and let my dog, Chewy, out of the back. He was a beautiful, black, chow mix, and definitely not friendly to strangers.

As I walked Chewy around, I saw a man at the picnic area farthest to our right. He was digging in the trash can. I felt sad as I watched him for a moment. I walked Chewy around some more and glanced up again. He had moved to the next trash can and was digging there.

Creating Abundance Arrgh, I yelled in complete frustration. For the third time that week I was standing in my kitchen with a pool of plastic food containers around my feet. My frustration had reached its peak as every time I pulled a container from that cupboard, the contents would spill out around me onto the floor. I started putting the containers back into the cupboard muttering to myself about the waste of time, lack of space and why was it that we had so many containers in the first place? As I shoved and stacked and grumbled under my breath it suddenly occurred to me (actually I think the clouds parted and angels might have sung)I am ABUNDANT! There it was, falling at my feet every time I opened the cupboard and I hadnt seen it abundance was all around me!

Have you noticed that you are abundant or, like me, are you missing all of the signs that are pointing to what is possible for you in your life? The reality is that your natural state is one of abundance but you often dont see it because you are surrounded by messages of not being enough. Billboards, television commercials, radio ads and even email spam are designed to make you feel that you are lacking in some area of your life and if you purchase their product or service you will finally be living the good life. It is this feeling of lack or scarcity that makes you doubt your worth; that makes you feel like you are not enough. This feeling is uncomfortable and to avoid discomfort you try to fill the void of lack and scarcity by focusing on abundance.

What does abundant/abundance mean? According to Dictionary.com it means present in great quantity, more than adequate; over sufficient; well supplied; overflowing (like my plastic containers). Merriam-Webster has a similar definition: more than enough, amply sufficient. What I notice in these definitions is that there is no mention of love, money, jobs, cars, etc. Clients will often tell me that they want to be more abundant but all their efforts of focusing on abundance have not had the results they were expecting. When I question them about their definition of abundance, it is often about having more money or love. It is this very narrow definition that can keep them in their lack situation.

So how do you create abundance in your life? There is more to it than thinking positively and focusing on what you want. While positive thinking and clarity are helpful they may be masking the true feeling you are experiencing which is the feeling of lack. Because we attract into our lives whatever we are feeling, if you feel you are lacking in some area of your life (love, money, jobs, opportunities, etc), you will continue to manifest more lack even if you are focusing on abundance. There is a misalignment between what you want and what you are feeling. To create the abundance that you are seeking you need to align with abundance.

Take a look around you. It took the plastic containers spilling onto the floor time and time again to make me stop and look around for all the examples of abundance in my life a spacious home, an excess of coffee mugs, love of family and friends, books, food and even clutter! What are your examples? Notice everything that you have in great quantity, that may be overflowing and recognize it as a sign of your abundance. Take delight in what you have and if you are hard pressed to find anything that feels like abundance go outside and look at the trees. Notice how many leaves they have and all the shade they provide. Or maybe you have an excess of snow where you live, or noise or silence. I have been known to refer to the dust bunnies as a sign of abundance! You are abundant; you just may have to look for it more consciously. Then, express your gratitude for what you do have that is in excess. Expressing your gratitude opens your heart and your heart is abundant. It has everything you need - unlimited love, courage, strength, joy, creativity, energy you name it. The more time you spend connected to and living from your heart the more full you will feel which leads to you guessed itmore abundance (even in the areas where you might have been lacking)!

We live with overwhelming media messages everyday and its not always possible to filter out the lack message but when you begin to focus on what you do have, on areas of your life where you are abundant you will, indeed, be living the good life.
