Khajuraho – Manifestation of Intricate Artisanship Khajuraho is situated in the Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh. It is well-known around the globe for its ancient temples with intricate sculptures. The name Khajuraho derived from the words Khajur and Raah, meaning trails lined with date palms. Most of these sculptures are life-like and depicts the minutest details of human structure. These sculptures are featured on the outer walls of the temples and never on the inside walls or the sanctum sanctorum. It is interesting to note that though Khajuraho temples are famous for their erotic sculptures, they represent only a small percentage (about 10%) of the entire sculptures. Majority of the sculptures in Khajuraho are those depicting the day to day life and activities of common man, and that of animals like elephants and horses among others. These intricate stone carvings are testimonials of the skilled workmanship of that era.Khajuraho is under the protection of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Excavations conducted by ASI in Khajuraho have unearthed more temples. Khajuraho is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and among the seven wonders of India.
